I did only download some basic tools: Firefox, Avira Anti-Virus Free, Steam and O&O ShutUP (Anti-Spy-Setting for Windows O&O ShutUp10: Das kostenlose Antispy-Tool für Windows 10). Keep in mind that if you are using big office software, it might lead to some problems. I have to add that it didn´t try both "legacy" and "vdx", because in the howto I was using, "vhdx" was explicitly metioned. You have to use the "VHDX" method for installation. Most of all, please make sure that you create 2 partitions (see point 2.). Please read carefully through the prerequisites on the WinToUSB site. If you use an older version of Windows, this will lead to problems further on. IMPORTANT: Make sure that you are using the up-to-date version (right now: creator fall version 1709). This step is quite easy - download the Windows 10 iso on the official microsoft download center.
At this point, I only want to mention that it´s a very good idea to have at least 2 partitions on the external hdd: One for the Windows system, the other one for data (to me: my steam library with all the games on it).ģ. The main difference to me is that if anything goes wrong on my system, I will be able to easily reinstall Windows and the apps (firefox, antispy, antivirus and steam itself) in short time. This is important, because it is not a productive system for Office applications etc. I will add here what was my initial goal: To have an external hdd for all my steam games. To me, the price was acceptable, because I didn´t find any further software that helped me to do what I wanted to do. Please note however that if you want to use like it did, it´s not free - you have to buy a license. This piece of software is able to install Windows from an ISO file to an external hdd. The solution is to use additional software. This might not be a good solution for users with a MacBook that has only limited space on its internal hdd. I posted it, because I didn´t find anything about this in a nutshell. So this thread is a mixture of howto and further questions. I stumbled over a few things, some of them got solved by me, some not. I got myself into something I wanted to do: Install Windows 10 on an external hdd, so that I can boot it on any machine.
